Local Community Cleanups
In spite of HEPCA's daily efforts in managing the solid waste in the Red Sea and the great support and involvement of concerned community members in cleaning up the coastal area
during the previous events; Plastics, metal, wood, rubber, and glass can all be found littering on natural bays and its coral reefs. This waste is often non-biodegradable, or persist over long periods of time, causing serious damage to the coastal and marine environments
Solid wastes damage coral colonies at the time of dumping, and thereafter through movements with natural tidal and surge action. Improperly disposed-of plastic bags end up in the sea. They can suffocate corals and other marine life. Certain fish, Bird and other wildlife become entangled or eat them, and die
On Saturday the 17th of February and In cooperation with the Wadi El Gimal National Park authority, Hamata School and other local community members; a huge cleanup campaign was launched in the area of Hamata Harbor to collect big quantity of marine debries drafted to the shores of Hamata by currents and tides
Meanwhile, on Sunday the 18th of February; a group of concerned professional divers from Dive Pro Academy Sahl Hasheesh and in cooperation with The Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh Resort; have conducted a massive underwater cleanup to the area of Sahl Hasheesh
