Marsa Alam – A Community Intervention

For far too long now, our supporters in the southern Red Sea have been calling on HEPCA to turn their attention towards the south. The remoteness of the region and lack of infrastructure, coupled with the region's pristine and delicate environment, pose many unique challenges for this developing touristic community. HEPCA has made a commitment to establishing a long-term presence in the southern Red Sea and we're calling on our supporters to help us with the challenges ahead. The HEPCA mooring team is looking for volunteers that we can train on mooring system installation and maintenance. This team of volunteers will serve as our secondary line of operation, in order to ensure that the mooring project can be self-sustained by the community if need be. Another big problem that has been brought to our attention is the amount of rubbish accumulation at some of our most popular shore-based dive sites like: Marsa Assalai, Marsa Egla, Marsa Samadai, and Marsa El Foukery. HEPCA is pleased to announce that we have sent 2 flip barrel bins to each of these sites and we will need your help to remind your guests the importance of disposing of rubbish properly. One of the biggest concerns that have been brought up by our members is the situation at Marsa Mubarak. This bay is essentially being used by live-aboard operators "as a toilet," on their routes back from the southern tours. The bay has been under tremendous abuse and pressure for far too long and it's time for an intervention. We are looking for a boat operator to help us install needed mooring units at Marsa Mubarak right away. As part of HEPCA's intervention planning for the southern Red Sea, we're creating a board of trustees from the community that will oversee the successful implementation of our sustainable development strategy for the region. The southern Red Sea community represents an impassioned and environmentally conscious group of people. You've played an integral role in pioneering a model that represents the ideal balance between environmental protection and tourism development. HEPCA is moved at this community's ability to take ownership over their environmental challenges and you've served as a great example for us all. Although HEPCA's range of operations began in Hurghada, our scope has steadily expanded through the passion of our dedicated members and supporters. Our achievements for the community of the southern Red Sea in recent years are a perfect example of HEPCA's transformative philosophies. HEPCA's efforts and accomplishments in the south include: our waste management strategy, the Haffafet project, our Bedouin handicraft centers, the Samadai initiative, the Bio Boat, and our landmark research center in Port Ghalib. HEPCA would like to make it clear that if any supporter calls on us from any corner of the Red Sea; we will do everything we can to come to your assistance.
